Interested in Volunteering?

Every year, the House Tour is a success due largely to the 400+ volunteers that commit their time during the weekend of the tour and the months leading up to it. We are always searching for people to help share the history of Elgin's home. Please take a moment to view the opportunities available below.

Tour Docent

These people are the true storytellers: they are stationed at the houses to share the story of each home with visitors.  Working a 3.5-hour shift on one day, this job allows plenty of time to visit all the homes on the tour and a complimentary ticket to the tour.  Additionally you will have access to a volunteer tour preview night where you will get to visit some of the homes before the general public.

This is generally a standing position. If you need special accommodations, please spell that out in the sign-up notes and we will do our best to grant them.

Registration Volunteer

Here you will hand out tour booklets & tickets, collect payments, and check people in who have already purchased tickets. You will also be giving directions & instructions to all House Tour attendees. You will be the first smiling face everyone sees! Working a 3.5-hour shift on one day, this job allows plenty of time to visit all the homes on the tour and a complimentary ticket to the tour.  Additionally you will have access to a volunteer tour preview night where you will get to visit some of the homes before the general public.

This is mostly a sitting position and would be a great fit for those with limited mobility who still want to volunteer!

Poster Distribution

Poster distributors go out and spread the news of this years tour by delivering posters and post cards to local businesses. As this is done before the tour, this job means you are completely free during tour weekend to attend the Historic Elgin House Tour with your complimentary ticket to the tour.

Steering Committee

These are the people worked behind the scenes working throughout the whole year to bring you one of Elgin's favorite events. We are always looking for new talented individuals to help us grow and give tour attendees the best the tour possible. You will also receive a complimentary ticket to the tour. Additionally you will have access to a volunteer tour preview night where you will get to visit some of the homes before the general public and a ticket to our exclusive after party.
